In the January 31, 2011 issue of Time Magazine, there was an article entitled, "Headbanger Nation: Concussions are clobbering U.S. kids. Here's why." The article has a nice overview of what a concussion is examining brain parts (that we all enjoy studying in class) along with a great graphic below. Check out the article--it's a worthy read for both us and our students.
Concussions are a very serious problem that are taking a big role in the game of football from the young children playing all the way to the pros. There have been new rules, new helmets, and safety classes taught but the number of concussions seems to still rise. You will NEED to read the article provided in the link to do well on this. Make a post detailing what you have learned from the article, remember 4 sentences, and post your NAME AFTER you have typed your resonse...

I Think Elisa's story is very serious, because even though she is very young, her accident could have left her damaged for life. Micheal also had a very seriouis consussion after being hit in the head his coach still put him back in the game afterwards. What ive learned is that even though when someone gets a concussion they may not react right after they get hurt. It may happen months later which is a scary situation think about.

Concussions are a very serious matter. People need to take more action into preventing it from happening, because reading about Elisa's story was eyeopening. About four million people, just in the U.S, have a concussion every year. Concussions could lead to a difficult life for the victim. If action hadn't been taken immediately for Elisa's matter, she could have had a damaged brain for the rest of her life.

I don't know what i would do if i ever had a concussion. It could cause severe damage to the brain for the rest of your life and even cause other problems dealing with the body..It can cause trouble with your speech, hearing, and body movements and your learning abilities. I think people should take more time to try to prevent themselves from even having to go through serious injuries such as a concussion. After i read about Elisa's and michael's experience i learned that even if you don't show your in pain right after the situation happened it could affect you later in life..

Concussions are very serious. They definitely aren't fun,I learned that tge hard way after a skateboard injury. It's pretty scary when it happens.People get them everyday because most people never take the time to think about safety first. If you do something potentially dangerous, such as football, without having the required skills and gear..chances are that you're going to get hurt.
ReplyDeleteConcussions are very serious!!! Infact worse if you are one of the kids who get put back in a game. Its also very up setting that foot ball is responsible for more than half the concussions kids suffer today.Up to 3.8 million Americans are getting concussed per year. But me im just thinking how blessed i am right now going back to a year ago not knowing who my family was in a coma for two weeks having a stroke and many more things going on in my brain Im so blessed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ReplyDelete"I Learned In The U.S Concussions Are An Alarmingly Commonplace Injury." It Can Damage The Brain In Different Ways. It's Good To Be Safe When You Playing Different Sports Such As Football And More. Even If They Don't React After They Get Hurt,It Would Still Be Good To Get Checked Out.

ReplyDeleteI defintly agree that concussions are serious I never realized how just a simple fall to ground could impact a concussion. I think at games their should be some kind of physical exaimine to players whose just taken a aggresive hit because just a few weeks ago I seen on a webite where a basketball player shot the winning basket and died "SECONDS" later while still in the gym( im not sure if concssions were the cause).
ReplyDeleteConcussions are a very serious and frightening issue we face today. Anyone from a toddler, like 3-year-old Elisa, to adults can suffer from this potentially deadly injury. People who play contact sports, such as football players, are more susceptible to this lethal problem, though it could happen to anyone at anytime. To me that is what makes it so scary.-Isaac Smith
ReplyDeleteI dont know what i would dp if i would every get a concussion. It would be scary for me and my family. You dont know how bad it could really be or get even sometimes you dont know that you have one. I hate to know that people have to go through these kinds of things they shouldnt but its life all we can do is try our best to keep it from happening.
ReplyDeleteA concussion is something that i wouldnt want., or wish on anybody. Because they are very painful & can last for a long period of time depeneding on what your situation is. They put us in a serious & frightening predicament.
ReplyDeleteConcussions are a very serious matter, some concussions can be very harmful and painful. Watching videos I learned that concussions can be a serious death matter!!!!! This is very scary because you never know when you could have a concussion! -The One And Only Precious!
ReplyDeleteConcussions seem to be a rising problem. My brother is 8 and engages in just about every sport you can think of and has had many concussions, some due to accidents and some due to sports. I have found that concussions aren't just in football or basketball. I as well have had concussions but i didn't think it was as serious as it really is. All the things that it can cause is scary just like Elisa, her parents didn't think it was necessary for her to be immediately taken to the doctor or a hospital because they didn't SEE any thing wrong BUT sometimes you cant see a problem its internal and then later on it progresses. That being said people involved in sports and activities that have had many concussions could be really serious.

Well from what i read in the article it seems that a Concussion can damage your brain really bad. The most of Concussions comes from Football helmets banging together costing a series of hurtful waves to the brain. It can cost memory lost and other harmful things to your brain. It can also mess up your blood veils in your brain costing internal bleeding.

Concussions can be very serious. i had one from wrecking a bicycle and slamming my head on the paved road.. i had a concussion for about a week i layed in bed not able to move my head, open my eyes or barley talk. That's how bad it was! i wouldnt wish that pain on anyone after having been through it myself.
ReplyDeleteAs just about everyone above said, concussions are a very serious matter. It is extremely important that coaches as well as parents realize this. Everyone should pay attention to symptoms after head injuries. That way, matters could be taken into the hands of doctors.
ReplyDeleteHead injuries are serious and you cant just let them slide and say oh they are okay. They mite have swelling or bleeding going on and you do not want that! The brain is one of the most important things in your body and with out it what would u be how would u act. That little girl got worse an then they took her to the hospital they CT scans that showed swelling no bleeding! the important message is be more conserend with ur brain cause thats the only one you have.!
ReplyDeleteConcussions are becoming a big issue now a days. 3.8 million Americans are getting concussions. Highschool football players are probably at the most risk for a concussion. 100,000 highschool footblaa players are diagnosed with a full blown concussion per year. Concussions should be taken more serious than what they are.

with all of the sports like football and soccer, and also just playing around and getting hurt, concussions can become a very serious situation. I wonder whether the idea that jocks are dumb is exactly the point that well they have up to 950 subconcussions a year.. Elisa's story seems like it may be common between children(bumping into each other) but when her head hit the cement everything changed. is bleeding from a concussion similar to an aneurism?
ReplyDelete-morgan pressley
Elisa got a concussion when she was just a young girl, she show signs and symptoms after she collided with her brother. she had withdraw, vomiting and lose of memory. Having a concussion is a very serious matter in any situation. A lot can happen after a concussion u can lose memory or one of your 5 scenes. The number one sport to get a concussion is football because you get hit in the head so many times when u tackle someone. So concussions are very serious and should not be taken for gannet.

I never knew that a concussion could be as life- threatning as it seems. I feel so sorry for the poor little toddler that was in initially injured by a young boy. Concussions are very serious and, deadly. Losing a sense due to an injury is horrible. If i had a son I would be very cautious to what sports he would play.

The little girl was really young to have that happen to her. No parent sould have to go though that with their little girl. The simptoms she had the farther realized there was somethign wrong with her that was serious. I know he was in panic mode when the thoughts of his baby girl. some peopel go into a conoussion and never come out.

Some concussions can be fatial. These days there becoming a big issue to younger children. Many of my friends have had concussins but they were not as lofr threatening as the little 3 year old girl.Foootball and soccer are dangerous sports and I think should be banned from little children.
ReplyDelete-SHUNDREA CRANK (SHA)
Concussions seem to be happening more and more these days. There becoming alot more Fatial and happening alot more in younger children. I dont think Ive ever seen someone as young as Elisa have a concussion though but im pretty sure shes not the youngest, but its so sad. The reason younger children get concussions is because of there soft spot in there head.. Football and soccer are dangerous sports and i think they should have more rules and regulations for younger children to make it safer for them to play and not get hurt as bad.
ReplyDelete-Amy Reese.
Concussions are happening more often today and can be fatial if they happen multiple times. It becomes a bigger issue the younger the person is. Unless some one developes better protective ware for football players they will continue to be threatened by dangerous brain injuries.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading the article we must be careful with what we do for fun or if we play a sport.Small children cannot be bicycling, ice skating or anything that has a hard ground underneith them that might cause them serious damage if they fell and hit their head hard enough to give them a concussion. If they do allow they must take safety procedures like knee pads, elbow pads and most important a helmet to protect their head from impact if they fell. Seeing how people are getting concussions more and more these days we must take it seriously.

ReplyDeletethanks bud.
you got it, i'm extending until Sunday night...so anyone that gets it in before then is good to go
ReplyDeleteI just read the article and was thinking that children are at bigger risks than teenages when playing contact sports. Our brains are at big risks when playing a contact sport. But children are at a bigger risk. I agree with Kasssandra. Children shouldn't play any type of sport with a hard ground unless they are completely covered with pads, helments, pillows, etc. all over. They are very fragal. Concussions are not to be taken lightly. They're very serious. You have no clue what one little concussion could do to a child. It could damage them servelly.
ReplyDeleteSorry this is late Mr. Putnum.

I never realized how fatal concussions can turn out, that if you hit your head hard enough you can start bleeding in the skull and die. This article has shown me if your playing spports, wear the protected gear tht your suppose to have, cause you never know when that one day might come head to head with someone and not realize how serious tht collision was until its to late. Espescially if your a youngin and you get hurt. -Gabe Shurter

ReplyDeleteWell I think that concussions are not a good thing in any way shape or form obviously. One because, other then the heart, it is the most important part of the body. If there is damage to the brain that's gonna effect everything else because the brain controls....everything. If someone has a serious enough concussion it can effect them in the long run especially in elisa's case with her Bering so young and her brain not being fully developed and what not. I've never had a concussion before and I don't really plan to but when there's a case of an athlete getting a concussion then that's just the risk that they have to take if they are devoted enough to the sport there playing. I was really surprised though when I saw that in some cases valley ball players sometimes even get concussions. But know human is perfect and accidents are going to happen regardless what were doing. I think they should come out with some kind of knew helmet or something though as far as football goes because I remember that number being pretty large. And Putnam.... I appreciate ya still givin me partial credit for this one with it bein late and all. I tried doin it a while back but it's hard figurin this blog stuff out on this here iPhone. I tried to make it lengthy
ReplyDeleteconcussions are a part of life there is no getting around them. this artical was informational to me because i found out that even after the initial injury the brain countinues to get damaged. it is especially dangerous to teens and kids because their brains are still forming and a concussion may damage the brain growth. i guess there's a reason profesional fighters are all old.
ReplyDeleteConcussions are a regular occurrence in children and athletes. The reason for this is because young children do not have the best of coordination and are very prone to run into someone, fall off of something, or in Elisa's case get in the way of someone moving faster than she was. In athletes concussions are typical because they are more concerned about beating the other guy than keeping themselves safe. Concussions are daangerous because they cause your brain to swell or bleed and without immediate surgery they could be fatal.
ReplyDeleteI think that concusions are a serious matter. I have learned that if you have an accident and everything seems ok that doesnt exactly mean that it is. I think that people should be more careful and try to take care of themselves as best as possible....

a concussion is not fun at all and i am actually glad i read this because i have had four concussions in my lifetime and they suck but i did not know they could cause this must damage but im glad i do now. i think they should find some way to padden more sports equipment to wear it doesnt jolt the brain everytime there is contact. or at least a way to make sports fun but safer that way kids and adults wouldnt get hurt so much playing the game they love.
